Abstract:

From Robert S. La Motte and his brother Harry to family, describing trip around the Horn; San Francisco in 1849; mining and Indians in the Humboldt Bay area; politics in California; the Vigilance Committee of 1851; Hawaii in 1851; fires and fire fighting in San Francisco; mining at Murphy's Flat.
Later letters from Robert S. La Motte relate to his army career: trip up the Missouri River to Montana; establishment of Fort Ellis in 1866; Crow Indian agreements; Sioux depredations; conditions at Fort Bridger, Wyoming, 1870-1872.
Also, included are typed transcripts of letters, 1849-1869, and R.S. La Motte's autobiography.
